Finalmente
Illustration
By.
fortuna ho scovato Helena Perez Garcia
sarà messa a tacere.

Helena Perez Garcia - The Four Seasons - 2012 |
Ciao Helena,
iniziamo col tuo “identikit”.
volevo lavorare in un ambito collegato all’arte. Ho studiato Belle Arti e ho
osservo, negli avvenimenti che accadono attorno a me.

Tratteggiati in
rinunciare né all’una né all’altra dimensione.

Helena Perez Garcia - Virginia Woolf - 2013 |
Oggi sembra
esserci un ritorno all’illustrazione.
accade, specialmente in Spagna).
dipinto. Louna inizia a inseguirlo attraverso le stanze del museo in
un’avventura emozionante e inattesa.

Moda, libri, cinema,
Generale qualche mese fa.
Poiché potrei riempire pagine e pagine coi miei
pochi titoli:
Under
the Skin
conoscenza e ispirazione, potrei consigliare questi: Lo Straniero e Il Primo Uomo
di Camus, Le Onde di Virginia Woolf, Lolita di Nabokov, Cent’Anni di Solitudine di Gabriel García Marquez e 1984 di Orwell.

Helena Perez Garcia - Belmondo - 2013 |
posto giusto per me. Londra mi sta aiutando a svilupparmi professionalmente e
personalmente.
D’altra parte qualche volta ho nostalgia

Helena Perez Garcia - Physiognomy II - 2012 |
Finally Illustration By. Too much
time has passed from the last “illustrated” conversation with Gioia Corazza, I was
having withdrawal symptoms. Fortunately I have discovered Helena Perez Garcia.
In particular I have fallen in love with Nadja
- a very delicate, fairy, surreal and rétro girl -, with her hair that
fluctuates within the goldfish bowl in the style of 20.000 Leagues Under The Sea and with her absorbed expression. The same
gaze which is present in many Helena’s
works.
And examining them I have
understood that - beyond the objective charm of the fine stroke and the soft
colors - the enigma of her characters, their unlimited prettiness but with a
subtle thrill of uneasiness make a difference. Maybe because their agitation,
their inscrutable faces, the historic and mythical cross references talk about
the personality of Helena.
In other words I adore this gentle Spanish
girl who lives in London, divides her time between illustrations and graphic
design, feeds on art and has understandably unrestrained passions for cinema, music,
literature. Let’s know her better.

Helena Perez Garcia - Henry VIII - 2012 |
Hi Helena, let’s start with your “identikit”: where are you from, how old are
you, how and why have you become an illustrator?
I'm 26
and I'm from Seville.
I became
an illustrator when I discovered that I could make a career out of something I
was passionate about. The process of becoming an illustrator was quite natural.
I always loved drawing and since I was very young I knew that I wanted to work
on something related to art. I studied Fine Arts and a Master in design. It was
during my last year of university when I discovered illustration and I decided
that I would combine the professions of graphic designer and illustrator.
Who has influenced your style and how has it been developing?
My style
is influenced mainly by art. Magritte, Neoclassical Art and Renaissance art are
my main influences.
I'm
inspired by everything that surrounds me and attracts my attention. I like
finding inspiration in art, film, music and literature. However, inspiration
can be found everywhere; in a conversation I overhear, in people I observe, in
the events that take place around me…

Drawn with fine strokes and soft colors, your characters - mainly
feminine - live in a surreal, dreamlike, fairy world. They stand out with their
thoughtful gracefulness and their eccentricity sometimes a bit disturbing.
Could you talk about them and your work?
The question is a pretty accurate description of my work! Illustration
is the best way I know to express myself, to express worries or thoughts I have
or anything that comes to my mind. I'd even say that it's kind of therapeutic
sometimes. That's why I always feel like I'm exposing myself when I show my
work.
What technique do you prefer?
I love analogue techiques because they allow me to have direct contact
with the surface I'm working on, with the materials. I usually work with pencil
and gouache, but I sometimes use ink and watercolour too.
Nowadays it seems there is a revival of the illustrations. Why? And what do you think about
its future?
We live
in a world dominated by the mass media, where we are bombarded by thousands of
images everyday. That's why I think illustration is so popular nowadays. The
personality of the illustrator makes the image stand out in a sea of images.
I don't
really know what the future of illustration is going to be, but I hope that the
profession will be valued as it should be and illustrators will get paid as
they should (something that doesnt's always happen, especially in Spain).

Helena Perez Garcia - Del amor y otros demonios - 2014 |
You are an illustrator but also a graphic designer, specialist in
editorial design, typography editing and packaging design. How do these aspects
live together?
Illustration and graphic design have some things in common. Both
disciplines consist on creating a visual language and require knowledge about colour,
proportion, composition. However, there are differences between them too,
especially when it comes to subjectivity. In graphic design the message must be
clear and the style depends on the project. Illustration allows me to express
myself more freely and in a deeper way, as traces of my personality are always
shown on the illustration. I like working as an illustrator and as a graphic
designer, and at the moment I couldn't give up any of them.
Recently the French publishing house Les
Petits Bulles Édition has published your children’s book Louna au Musée. What’s it about?
The book is about Louna, a little girl who goes to the art museum with
mum and dad and, suddenly, a dog comes out of a painting. Louna starts chasing
it through the different rooms of the museum in an exciting and unexpected
adventure.

Fashion, cinema, publishing, music; going into details, what would you like to illustrate?
I'd love
to illustrate a book by Virginia Woolf or Gabriel García Marquez.
The
projects to which you are working on and those ones in future.
I've
just finished working on my second illustrated book. I'm also focused on
personal work.
Something personal: an obsession, a
mania or what you do when don’t draw or your favorite movies and the music that
you listen to. In short
something about you.
I tend
to become quite obsessed with the things I like. Lately I've been collecting
Buster Keaton movies. I became enchanted by his stone face and his poetic and
inventive humour the moment I saw the film The
General a few months ago.
As I
could fill pages and pages with my favourite books, films and music albums, I'm
going to restrain myself and reduce the list to a few titles:
Under the Skin is the best film I've seen
recently at the cinema; I loved the inventiveness of the film and the amazing
music. I'd also recommend an old film by one of my favourite directors; Paths of Glory by Kubrick.
As for
music, I've been listening a lot to the latest solo album by Damon Albarn, Everyday Robots, which is a beautiful
and intimate album.
Books
are an endless source of knowledge and inspiration, I could recommend the
following: The Outsider and The First Man by Camus, The Waves by Virginia Woolf, Lolita by Nabokov, A Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and 1984 by Orwell are some of my favourite books,
just to mention a few.

You come from Seville but you live in London. What do you miss
about Spain and what do you like about London?
I miss a
lot of things from Spain but at the same time I love living in London, it feels
that it's the right place for me to be at the moment. London is helping me
developing myself professionally and personally. I think it's great for anybody
to live abroad for a certain period of time, it really helps to broaden the
mind and to see things from a different perspective. And London is just the
right place for me! I love how cosmopolitan the city is and the many things
that are happening here. I feel privileged for being able to go to The Tate or
to The National Gallery almost every weekend.
On the
other hand, I get homesick sometimes because I miss my family, my friends, my
cat Momo and the pace of life. I've been living in Spain for 24 years so the
sense of belonging is something natural. I also miss the long, long summers and
going to the beach. I still haven't
got used to the British weather!
What’s the ideal background track
in order to watch your illustrations?
