By oggi parliamo di Gioia
Corazza.
natura inesorabile e fuori dagli schemi.
Gioia Corazza l’ho scovata accidentalmente
Poi,
leggendo i suoi articoli su Grazia.it
perdersi.
Insomma, non vedevo l'ora d'intervistarla.

Gioia Corazza - Rosso - Grazia.it |
Ciao Gioia,
iniziato a interessarmi alla moda, poi all’università ho scelto Design e Moda
In
t’ispira?
Niente
in particolare, tutto.
Visage e Power, Corruption and Lies
dei New Order.

Il tuo tratto è
sottile e deciso.
cuoricini sulle guance eppure toste, irriducibili, decisamente rock'n'roll.
Ci
quesito prima, in genere dopo rifletto su cosa volessi comunicare.
Ecco, forse principalmente voglio
poi uso Photoshop e Illustrator.
a me.

Gioia Corazza - Lingerie - Grazia.it |
qualitativamente, vuol dire crescere quantitativamente.
moda, sopra tutti, Comme des Garçons, quindi Rei Kawakubo e Yohji Yamamoto, poi
Paul Gaultier agli inizi. Nostrani, sicuramente Prada, Antonio Marras, Costume

Black
Cherry - Goldfrapp (ma anche tutti gli altri
pezzi dei Goldfrapp).

Gioia Corazza - Stella Jean |
Today we talk about Gioia Corazza.
First of all I’ve been
amazed - I know, it looks crazy - by her name. You could think it isn’t thanks
to her that she has a magnificent name. Maybe, but the fate and the good taste
of her parents pinned on her a kind of oxymoron which summarizes perfectly the
determined and sensitive feature of her character. It’s not surprising that the
portrayed girls are just like that: graceful dolls but with a relentless and
nonconformist nature.
Some time ago I came across Gioia Corazza and was hypnotized by her
damsels with the hearts on the cheeks. Then, reading her articles on Grazia.it and UpStyle Magazine and her Facebook
statuses, I’ve discovered such a profundity and so much affinities that I’ve
been really impressed.
I like her versatility, the ability to pass easily from
fashion to everything else but always with a reason; see the volume Vivere Green by Annalisa K. Varesi. Furthermore I like so much her keenness for music (there are echoes of
synthesizers and electric guitars in her works). In the end I like her because
she is a great illustrator, an excellent journalist and a person who thinks
that fashion isn’t only the shoe X or the dress Y but a whole along with music,
art, cinema, literature; a person who thinks that fashion is creativity, self
expression, zeitgeist and ultimately dream in which you can get lost.
Hi Gioia, let's start off with the unavoidable question: where are you from, how old are you, what is your background and how have you become an illustrator?
I was born in Marche, in a small
seaside village, but I’m planning to move elsewhere. I’m 29
years old.
My path hasn’t been linear, I’m not
a person who has known what she would have done from time immemorial. I
discovered it late, although the pencil and the colors were my toys. When I was
at the primary school, someone noted my aptitude for drawing, so that also my
father had to accept it: he tore his hair out imagining me unemployed.
I
attended “liceo classico” (secondary school specializing in classics subjects)
and there I started to be interested in fashion; then at the university I chose
Design and Fashion but, if I went
behind, I’d do a different choice, namely Literature
that is similar to my way of being and considering fashion.
I arrived to
illustration on my own, I was helped by the desire to experiment.
Who has influenced your style and how has it been developing?
Initially I was influenced by Synthpop and New Wave, then I began to be interested in pop culture - especially French and Japanese - and to research its evolution. My best friend, an excellent graphic designer with an outstanding professional background, was the first to support me and I've reached a clear stylistic identity comparing our viewpoints. He was my mentor.

Gioia Corazza - Punk - Grazia.it |
What does inspire you?
I have a folder where I collect the Eighties albums' covers and this is my starting point but after I complete this influence with my mood, the client's request, etc. For example, one of my favorite covers is Duran Duran's Rio by Patrick Nagel, the illustrator who has influenced the look of Bowie and George Michael music videos, besides the fashion photography of Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton.
I also add other two fundamental covers: Visage's Fade to Grey and New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies.
Your stroke is fine and strong, like the creatures that you draw: fairy,
with romantic hearts on the cheeks but determined, immovable, certainly
rock’n’roll.
Around them there is nothing, a dreamlike dimension where fashion
appears as a natural expression of personality. Could you talk about your
works? What do you want to transmit through them?
I don’t plan what I want to
represent on the paper, this is my freedom’s area. I don’t question myself, after
generally I think over what I wanted to communicate. But in everyday life I
behave in an opposite way and I notice that paradoxically my purposes become
possible when I don’t decide them earlier. But if we are talking about fashion,
my intent is clear: to abolish the stereotypes about women which continue to
nourish the cultural decline. Fashion, in this sense, is an important instrument,
more than other arts.
What technique do you use? What are the tools of the trade?
I don’t use specific techniques but
generally I draw by hand with the pencil and then I use Photoshop and Illustrator.
When I have time I mix temperas, watercolors, colored pencils, pastels, Indian
ink, but it depends on my mood.
Nowadays it seems that there is a big revival of the illustrations. What do you think about it? What shall the evolution of the illustration be, in particular regarding fashion?
Some fashion houses (first of all
Prada) have understood sooner the importance of the illustration. The sea of
photographic material wasn’t sufficient to communicate the stylistic identity;
there was need to recover the empathy with the interlocutor. The illustrator is
a dreams’ ferryman, his illustrations come into the world thanks to his moods,
he watches the reality but he doesn’t reproduce it accurately - as it happens
in the case of the photography - because he uses the imagination. I acknowledge
I don’t particularly love photography, but often I love photographers, meaning
that I’ve noticed some tune of viewpoints.
It’s true that Instagram is making life hard for the photographers, but it isn’t true
that everybody can be a photographer; you must have the capacity for observing.
Many illustrators employ the photography as starting point for their
illustrations and in future I hope that this friendship will continue. I think
that fashion can’t get along without the illustration.

Gioia Corazza - Trench - Grazia.it |
You are not only an illustrator but also a web editor for Grazia.it and UpStyle Magazine. You write about niche themes like no mainstream fashion designers and history of fashion with musical and cinematographic references. What do you think about fashion blogs, social networks and the diktat of like?
There are too many fashion blogs
and many of them are devoid of Italian language’s knowledge and content. The
anglicisms often are used to hide the incompetence.
I think that fashion has a
history that we have to study and respect. Fashion is continuously influenced
by the other arts and we have to study in depth these arts. The anxiety to sell
is exhausting the companies: in the name of the like or follow some press
offices entrust the communication to persons who doesn’t know a lot about
communication and not even about fashion. It’s necessary to make a careful
selection.
Obviously I follow some fashion blogs but only those ones which have
an editorial approach.
What are your fashion benchmarks?
My fashion benchmarks are first of
all Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto, then the Antwerp Six like Ann Demeulemeester,
Dries Van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck, Marina Yee, Martin Margiela etc. (I’m
sorry about its current transformation without Martin). Then Raf Simons who is
my favourite - especially when he was Jil Sander’s creative director -, Viktor
& Rolf and early Jean Paul Gaultier. My favorite Italian designers are Prada, Antonio Marras,
Costume National, Francesco Scognamiglio, Anteprima, Moschino, Andrea Incontri
and Valentino by Chiuri and Piccioli.
What do you like and what you don't like I like about fashion?
I like the fashion origins, the
effect that the fashion has on the culture, its variability and its firm roots.
I don’t like the language (both verbal and not) employed to communicate it,
this language is vague and pompuous. I don’t like that few people understand
the evolving characteristic of fashion.
Fashion, cinema, music, publishing: what would you like to illustrate?
I’d like to illustrate albums’
covers and contribute with my illustrations to the making of music videos but
also videos about the story of a brand or a product. Music is a permanent
feature in my life, I consider it essential for the research of new incentives.

The projects to which you are working on and those ones in future.
I’m working on new projects but at
present they are top secret.
A young illustrator to keep an eye on.
Chiara Attorre, a talented friend
who sews beautifully as well.
Something personal: an obsession, a mania or what you do when don't draw or your favorite movies and the music that you listen to. In short something about you.
When I’m sad I buy red lipsticks. When
I’m happy I rouge. I like loneliness.
When I go out, the day after I always
need to stay alone. There are weekends that I pass in my study reading and
listening to the music. I recommend loneliness, you feel good if you have a lot
to say to yourself, also because then you have a lot to say to the others.
What's the ideal background track in order to watch your illustrations?
