L’ultimo in ordine
The
festivals also have their trends. The social networks’ community has chosen
over the years the cult events: Pukkelpop,
Sziget, Sónar, Exit. The last one
is Primavera, whose success has been
so relentless that the “older brother” Sonar
looks by now like an antique.
In questo gioco dei grandi eventi si
perdono così di vista innumerevoli festival altrettanto degni di nota. Uno di
questi è sicuramente il Calvi on the
Rocks, giunto alla sua undicesima edizione. Immersa in uno scenario
semplice e terribilmente efficace: natura, mare e musica.
ciclicamente in tre momenti e ambienti ben distinti.
Within
this game of big events many remarkable festivals don’t catch the attention
they deserve. One of them is Calvi on the
Rocks, come to its eleventh edition. Situated in a breathtaking landscape
at the north-west of Corsica, the small city of Calvi becomes for six days per
year the pantheon of excesses and electro beats. Thanks to a simple and
powerful recipe: nature, sea and music. And thanks to a varied “roster” of
about one hundred djs and producers.
dominata dai club e dagli aftershow che durano fino all’alba.
The
festival is divided in three moments: all afternoon long you can listen to live
and dj sets on the beach; then the scheduling moves towards a unique space (Théâtre
de Verdure) between the citadel and the sea; by night clubs and aftershows play
a central role until dawn.
Sarebbe
magnifico un Calvi on the Rocks con
gli aftershow in spiaggia. Ma immaginiamo i problemi organizzativi che
ostacolano una tale soluzione.
Aeroplane e Attar! all'Annexe club
The
strength of Calvi on the Rocks is
just the afternoon part. It’s true that the club expresses in the best way the
power of electro music, but by summer what better is there than dancing
barefoot on the sand with the sun which kisses you and the sea which cuddles
you? In that scenery the hierarchies overturn and the club looks like a cage.
Like the Annexe (150-200 people of
capacity), so narrow as to weaken the set of Aeroplane and Attar! (who
had already played the previous day at Octopussy
beach); or the Golfe Taverne with Amandine and Fafi. Calvi on the Rocks with
the aftershows on the beach would be great.
Mock & Toof
to Wendo.
On
the beach indeed we saw the best things: above all the live set of the English
duo Mock & Toof, made up of
Duncan Stamp and Nick Woolfson (we have already written something about them).
With their indefinable sound – characterised by “intrusions” in the last 30
years electro - Mock & Toof did a
remarkable live, enriched by gems like the lively Day Ken Died and the anthem (in two different versions) Farewell to Wendo.
Kasper Bjorke
in Casa dopo l’ottimo set di Kasper
Bjørke,un altro scandinavo dal
cuore caldo.
marcatamente rétro, parte centrale affidata all’elettronica più spinta e
The
other “big thing” of the festival was the dj set by Todd Terje, the Norwegian fallen in love with the italo disco and
the balearic sound, able with his Scandinavian DNA to inflame the audience at Diesel in Casa after the good show by Kasper Bjørke. Todd dressed up as
orchestra leader offering a wise dj set: beginning with rétro sounds, in mid
storming electro and closing with tropical and balearic rhytms. And finally the
end-track, able to make dance all the people on the beach: Todd Terje’s hit Inspector
Norse.
ElectroMode, ossia Pierre-Alexandre Busson aka Yuksek.
Yuksek, Get a Room! e Brodinski
Also
the live sets of the whiskered Acid Pauli
and Nu deserve a mention. At Mar a Beach on the other hand the
Parisian duo Get a Room! and Yuksek performed five-six hours
back-to-back. In an unmatched scenery (a beach “designed” in the rocks) the three
friends – with the support of Brodinski,
who handed out innumerable mojitos – enjoyed themselves playing noisy electro.
E poi ancora Mayer Hawthorne, Ines Melia,
Dada Disco, Horse Meat Disco, Arnaud
Rebotini.
chiusura del Calvi on the Rocks.
And
then Mayer Hawthorne, Ines Melia, Dada Disco, Horse Meat Disco,
Arnaud Rebotini. And many more whom
we couldn’t admire – from time to time – because of the absence of the gift of
ubiquity, money, time; because our festival ended on the 8th of
July, two days before the closing of Calvi
on the Rocks. With the regret for not listening to Flume, Jackson & His
Computer Band, Trentemøller and
not taking part in the closing party on the beach.
Preferiamo
comunque ricordare il Calvi on the Rocks per
festa straordinaria. Anyway
we want to remember Calvi on the Rocks for
the emotions rather than for the missed opportunities. For sea, wild nature,
beautiful girls and boys, hard Corsican character, the magic of electro music.
With the will and the hope that we’ll come back again and a suggestion to our
readers: don’t miss next years this amazing party!
