ElectroMode: SuperDuper Hats - Who Is On Next? 2013

Questo post è il primo di una serie dedicata ai finalisti di Who Is On Next? 2013; nella maggior parte dei casi nomi di cui volevo parlare davvero da tanto. Come il team fiorentino SuperDuper Hats, già nel Guinness dei primati per due motivi: 1) sono tra i finalisti della sezione accessori sia nel concorso maschile sia in quello femminile (il vincitore del concorso maschile si saprà domani al Pitti, mentre per la donna bisognerà attendere l’8 luglio); 2) è la prima volta che Who Is On Next? seleziona un brand di cappelli.

Ma che cos’è SuperDuper? Il nome SuperDuper è tutto un programma e riporta a un passato mitico. In slang significa super, eccellente ed è riferito a Gary Cooper nella canzone Puttin’ on the Ritz (1929) di Irving Berlin (Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper, super-duper).

Nel nostro caso SuperDuper sono Matteo Gioli (musicista e designer) e le sorelle Ilaria (architetto) e Veronica Cornacchini (textile designer), intenti a fare tutt’altro quando in un mercatino d’antiquariato si sono imbattuti nel "segno divino": una forma lignea anni Trenta per feltri che li ha spinti alla scoperta di un universo d’altri tempi, quello della modisteria, dei cappellai e degli ultimi laboratori specializzati esistenti in Toscana.

This post is the first of a series dedicated to the Who Is On Next? 2013 finalists. We’re talking about the Florentine team SuperDuper Hats, that is already in the Guinness World Book of Records for two reasons: 1) they’re among the accessories finalists both in the masculine contest and in the feminine one (we’ll know the winner of the masculine contest tomorrow, while about the feminine one we should wait for the 8^th of July); 2) it’s the first time that Who Is On Next? selects a hats brand.

But what is SuperDuper? The name SuperDuper takes back to a legendary past. It means super, excellent and it refers to Gary Cooper in the Irving Berlin song Puttin’ on the Ritz (1929, Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper, super-duper).

In this case SuperDuper are Matteo Gioli (musician and designer) and the sisters Ilaria (architect) and Veronica Cornacchini (textile designer), absorbed in doing other things when the divine sign appeared: a Thirties wooden mould for felt hats which pressed them to discover the universe of the millinery and the last specialized workshops in Tuscany.

Apprendere tecniche in via d’estinzione e ridar loro nuova linfa era l’unico modo per rendere operativo “l’oggetto”. Così da un giorno all’altro i SuperDuper creando per se stessi si sono ritrovati a fare un lavoro bellissimo e desueto e a lanciarsi in una missione quasi impossibile: realizzare cappelli artigianali perfetti e riportarli sulle nostre teste come quando era impensabile uscire senza.

Detto fatto. Nel 2010 vengono presentati i primi copricapi SuperDuper e poco a poco iniziano ad arrivare ordini da alcune delle migliori boutique del mondo. Un po’ vintage un po’ contemporanei, col loro fascino rétro adeguato ai giorni nostri ammaliano inesorabilmente. Basta dare un’occhiata alle collezioni. Come il prossimo autunno-inverno ispirato al vagabondo chic evidente nei modelli Boheme, Lightnin o Miner.

The only way of making operational the “object” was to learn endangered techniques, so the three designers have started making a very beautiful work with a purpose: to create perfect artisan hats and bring them back on our heads.

In 2010 the SuperDuper team presented the first headgears and the orders from the best boutiques started arriving. Vintage and contemporary, these hats enchant with their rétro charm adequate to today. You have only to glance at the collections. The next fall-winter is inspired by the hobo, the chic vagrant, and this inspiration is evident in the Boheme, Lightnin or Miner models.

La cosa incredibile dei cappelli è la loro capacità di trasportarti con la fantasia in altri mondi. Vedi Nucky che per me è legato a Nucky Thompson di Boardwalk Empire.

The incredible thing of the hats is their capacity of carrying away by the imagination in incredible worlds. See the Nucky model; to me it means Nucky Thompson of Boardwalk Empire.

Eccezionale anche Camo che mi ricorda le cuffie dei primi piloti d’aereo e che mi piace identificare con questo scatto di Katharine Hepburn.

Camo is also extraordinary. It reminds me the caps of the first aviators and this photo of Katherine Hepburn.

About the feminine models, Pineapple is exactly a pineapple, Susette is a wonderful cloche, more Sixties than Twenties. Sylvie, Junia and Wanda are delicious too.

Susette specie nella versione in piume è una cloche meravigliosa, più Sixties che Twenties.

Deliziose poi Sylvie, Junia e Wanda e i feltri un po’ maschili.

Ma potrei andare avanti all’infinito, anche se due modelli mi fanno impazzire per la loro originalità: il Mercurial che si compone di tre parti variamente assemblabili per dare vita in un colpo solo a tre copricapi diversi

And I’d continue endlessly, although two models drive me crazy due to their originality: Mercurial consists of three mixable parts that give life to three different hats and the dandy Elettra, Nucky and Monk Eyeglassess models (s-s 2013), born by the collaboration with Lotho brand and characterized by a pince-nez. Obviously the spring-summer 2013 is a chest full of treasures: Di Maggio or Janez, Drusilla and Sabrina.

Il bello è che - pur restando incantata davanti alle immagini dei divi della vecchia Hollywood o alle foto dei miei nonni o anche quando avvisto qualcuno dotato di stile e naturalezza - io non riesco a indossare cappelli. Li adoro ma ancora non ho trovato quello che fa per me.

La mia speranza si chiama SuperDuper.

Even though I love the old stars pictures and everyone can wear the hats stylishly and naturally, I can’t wear them. I adore the hats but I haven’t still found the right one.

My hope is SuperDuper.
