In
risparmiati.
The first impact with Tim Walker dated back to 1999. We’re talking about a fashion story
for W Magazine never seen again: I remember the black and white, a beach, an
horse and a languid and hypnotic atmosphere. An atmosphere that has captured me
forever.
Afterwards, when I bumped into almost
heartbreaking pictures by reason of their beauty, there was some greenhouse out
of commission, milky lights, ethereal and surreal creatures and at the end I
discovered that it was of his doing.
So my love for Tim has begun.
If you find strange that this is the first post
about the topic, the paradox is that we are frightened of our passions.
But this time I don’t balk; Tim wants it and the Somerset
House as well.
In this neoclassical building between the Strand
and the River Thames - seat of expositions, concerts and from 2009 of the
London Fashion week - they aren’t unsparing.

consubstantial to the TW’s
visionary, crazy, ironic world dangerously on the verge of kitsch: mechanical
puppets, skeletons, swans, insects musicians and even a “poor” Spitfire.

Insomma,
in digitale.
In
realtà, che Tim Walker avrebbe preso
una piega molto poco mainstream era intuibile fin dagli esordi. Forse addirittura
dall’epoca in cui era stagista all’archivio Cecil Beaton della Condé Nast
Library.
Poi la laurea all’Exeter College of Art nel 1994 e la fondamentale
esperienza di assistente full time per Richard Avedon.
Tornato
riviste prestigiose impazziscono per le sue immagini decadenti e romantiche;
Blow Award for Fashion Creators e il
Contemporaneamente teNeues pubblica Pictures,
In sum the paradise of the set designers. So, what
appears in the photos, isn’t fruit of postproduction and retouches but real,
like the film on which the fairy deliriums are impressed.
In reality, since the beginnings it has been
deducible that Tim won’t have taken
a mainstream turn. Maybe even since the period of the Cecil Beaton Archive at
Condé Nast Library. Then the graduation at the Exeter College of Art in 1994
and the fundamental experience as full time assistant to Richard Avedon.
On returning to England he devoted himself to
portraits and documentary work, but at 25 signed his first fashion story for
Vogue binding his own destiny to fashion photography and its infinite
possibilities.
The prestigious magazines went crazy about his
decadent and romantic pictures; about the British quintessence that matches
ancient mansion houses in melting decline with retro refinements and
extravagances worthy of the English eccentricity and humour.
In 2008 he received the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creators from the British Fashion
Council and the Design Museum in London dedicated to him the first major
exhibition. At the same time teNeues published Pictures, recap of 12 years of activity.
In 2010 he went near cinematography with the short
film The Lost Explorer, made out of
Patrick McGrath’s short story.
It will be the increasing
passion for cinema but in the recent works there has been a “sober” , as much
as possible, and dark turn. The sets have become more “simple”,

A
ogni modo, vertigine estatica e insana aspirazione a rifugiarsi nelle sue foto persistono.
However, the insane aspiration to take refuge to
his shots persists. No technicolor cats, no necklaces of immense pearls or
dresses lighted as lanterns? Fortunately, the things don’t change with toy
soldiers, bread planes and grotesque dolls.

All you have to do is doing a tour at the Somerset House until the 27th
of January to become aware of it. Stella Tennant in a rhododendrons garden -
like a whimsical version of Boldini -, Olga Shearer among pastel color columns,
horses and swans, Karlie Kloss and Humpty Dumpty or Kinga Rajzak who glides
with a flying saucer on a fox hunt, are perfect embodiments of the lost and
enchanted Tim Walker’s worlds.

Onirico,
fiabesco, ironico, Walker è come
Dreamlike, fairy, ironic, Walker is like Andersen, Lewis Carroll and the Brothers Grimm got
together with a bit of Tim Burton and aristocratic style in Downton Abbey way.
A nostalgic dreamer who believes in the unbridled
fantasy, in the innocence and in the sense of wonderment. A Story Teller ready
to leaf through the book and tell a fairytale; my fairytale begins in this way:
in a huge room - one time sumptuous and now crammed into old dusty furnitures -
there is a girl-peacock perched on a china cabinet. You don’t notice her
immediately, because the first thing you perceive is the chaos. But after you
see her and a whirlwind sucks you. A universe opens in front of you and your
alone desire is to submerge yourself in it.
